Always a man of many surprises, we now may glimpse the sacred side of Gordon Myers, having had ample sampling of the profane, via his many humorous essays in The Art of Belly Canto. In his Preface to this volume, he states:
"In this edition the reader will find an ‘over-laid’ function: Two uses for the price of one! One: Each of these SONGS OF EARLY AMERICANS may be used by itself as a solo in a church service. Some may be arranged in groups to be sung in concert. Two: When all of these SONGS OF EARLY AMERICANS are sung together, each following the Biblical or Historic reading that precedes it, the whole becomes a solo cantata, A THANKSGIVING CELEBRATION.
[Also,] Some random thoughts:
This ‘Two-for-One’ group...may have special appeal to members of a Voice Class. After all, one will be sampling the history, the music, the literature and re-creating aspects of American culture that are 200 years old! A church choir may wish to perform some of the songs in unison, while others are given to various solo voices. A priest, a minister or a rabbi may wish to participate as the narrator..." Etc.
