Annette Johansson has just retired as Professor of Voice at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In addition to the actual 30 songs, her editing of this volume includes: The IPA transcriptions of the songs; Instructions for using the I.P.A. for the tricky Swedish language; A brief biography of the composer, with a complete list of all his 65 songs, listed both alphabetically and by opus numbers; A brief listing and biographies of the poets of the song texts; A Bibliography; A Discography; and Information Sources.

The compositions of Swedish composer Wilhelm Stenhammar (1871-1927) have recently begun to capture broad international interest. Outside of Sweden, the excellence of Stenhammar’s output has always been obscured by the long-recognized works of the eminent Nordic composers Edward Grieg, Jan Sibelius, and Carl Nielsen. However, since the mid-80s, there has been a marked increase in performances of his works, and recordings are available worldwide. One such recording is most auspicious: Musica Sveciae: MSCD 623, produced in 1989, features Anne Sofie von Otter, mezzo-soprano, and Håkan Hagegård, baritone, singing 29 of the 30 songs in this collection.
