      By Doug Borwick

A cycle of songs for medium high voice and piano, set to six poems by Emily H. Wilson. The songs include: I. Southern fiction; II. Love; III. Sisters; IV. Blue Ridge and Louisiana; V. Blackwoman; VI. The electric acid kool-aid immersion; and VII. Southern fiction (reprise).

Borwick seems to have fashioned something really fine here: direct, earthy, emotional music full of subdued fervor and idiomatic ‘Southern’ mood. I was reminded of the power and sweetness of Barber’s KNOXVILLE SUMMER OF 1915; while Borwick’s style is his own, and in no way beholden to Barber or anyone else, these songs mine the same vein as Barber’s masterpiece, and do it with vast skill.
