This new volume includes all the song texts of Richard Strauss, including "Malven," his Vier Letzte Lieder, and Josef Weinheber's two poems, "Sankt Michael" and "Blick vom oberen Belvedere" (used by permission). Professor Beaumont Glass uses the same presentation in this volume as in his five previous books containing the complete song texts of Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, and Hugo Wolf: Word- for-word English translations, IPA transcriptions and commentary. A special note should be made about "Malven." It was Richard Strauss's very last song. In March 1949, he sent the manuscript to soprano Maria Jeritza as a gift, asking her to have a copy made and sent to him. Before she got around to doing that, he died. After his death, she refused to let anyone see the song. It was not made available until after her own death in July 1982. It is published as a separate song by Boosey & Hawkes. The first public performance took place in Avery Fisher Hall in New York on January 10, 1985. The singer was Kiri Te Kanawa, the accompanist Martin Katz.
