Marcie Stapp states: "In editing this volume of works by Monteverdi and Gluck I was faced with a substantial challenge in proofreading the libretti. This is due to the fact that for some of the operas no original autograph score is in existence, and that a number of 'versions' have been created either by the composer himself or a later party. One also finds a dazzling number of text discrepancies among different scores and libretti, in many cases due to a 'modernization' of the 17th century Italian. Rather than take on the challenge of researching material that has already been studied extensively by the world's great musicologists, I opted to simply adhere to a particular critical edition of each opera."
