By Laurence R. Richter
From the author of the complete song texts for Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Mussorgsky, this composite volume of song texts makes the fourth in the series. It contains 116 song texts by 17 composers, including: Abaza, Aliabiev, Arensky, Balakirev, Borodin, Bulakhov, Cui, Dargomyzhsky, Dubuque, Glinka, Gurilyov, Kharito, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rubinstein, Varlamov, Verstovsky, and Yakovlev.
This fourth offering is an attempt to represent the many remaining song composers of the nineteenth century who do not merit their own volumes, for various reasons. Some simply didn't produce enough. Borodin, for instance, wrote only sixteen songs, all of which are included. Other composers were very prolific composers of songs; but their production is not of consistent interest or popularity.
