      By Beaumont Glass

As with Professor Glass previous works, SCHUBERT'S COMPLETE SONG TEXTS, (in two volumes) and BRAHMS' COMPLETE SONG TEXTS (in one volume), the Wolf edition contains the IPA transcriptions and word-for-word translations of the foreign language texts, as well as frequent fourth-line literary texts (for clarification of word-for-word translations which are not totally clear, due to inverted word order and other such problems that occur in foreign language constructions).

"...this book is absolutely indispensable to any serious student of the Wolf canon. It is the latest - but thankfully not the last - in a series of similar studies from the prolific pen of Beaumont Glass... Commentary that follows each entry contains exceptionally valuable observations on the nature of the song, interpretive suggestions, lingual hints, background information, mythological references and the like... No understanding of his [Wolf's] legacy or appreciation of its riches is complete without this important book. Voice professionals of every ilk owe Beaumont Glass a huge debt of gratitude for his invaluable contribution to the Wolf literature."
      Richard Dale Sjoerdsma, Editor
JOURNAL OF SINGING (official journal of the National Association of Teachers of Singing)

Professor Glass varies his approach from the Schubert and Brahms editions, however, by not presenting the song texts in alphabetical order. This allows him to present Wolf's collections: The Mörike Lieder; The Goethe Lieder; The Spanisches Liederbuch; The Italienisches Liederbuch; etc., as groups, independent of each song's alphabetical position.
