OPERA LIBRETTI:

GLUCK AND MONTEVERDI OPERA LIBRETTI

By Nico Castel
Assisted and Edited by Marcie Stapp

Volume I contains:   Orfeo ed Euridice (in Italian); Alceste (in French); Iphigènie en Audlide (in French) and Iphigènie en Tauride (in French); by Christoph Willibald Gluck and L'Orfeo (in Italian); II Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria (in Italian); and L'Incoronazione di Poppea (in Italian) by Claudio Monteverdi

Forward by Maestro James Conlon

Marcie Stapp states: "In editing this volume of works by Monteverdi and Gluck I was faced with a substantial challenge in proofreading the libretti.   This is due to the fact that for some of the operas no original autograph score is in existence, and that a number of 'versions' have been created either by the composer himself or a later party.   One also finds a dazzling number of text discrepancies among different scores and libretti, in many cases due to a 'modernization' of the 17th century Italian.   Rather than take on the challenge of researching material that has already been studied extensively by the world's great musicologists, I opted to simply adhere to a particular critical edition of each opera."

THE LIBRETTI OF MOZART'S COMPLETED OPERAS
In Two Volumes
By Nico Castel

The reader might be aware of a slight title variation of the Mozart, as contrasted with the Verdi and Puccini libretti. Professor Castel did not wish to include Mozart's uncompleted operas and thought the title, THE COMPLETE MOZART LIBRETTI would be misleading to the reader.

Volume I contains: Bastien und Bastienne; La Clemenza di Tito; Così fan Tutte; Don Giovanni; Die Entführung aus dem Serail; La Finta Giardiniera; and La Finta Semplice.

Maestro Julius Rudel states in his Foreword for the Mozart series, "...Nico Castel, whose artistry I have known and admired since the days when I first invited him to join the New York City Opera, has, by simply using the common Dictionary approach, presented us with a natural and foolproof method of pronunciation... It is a brilliant solution to a problem that has often caused frayed tempers and wasted time and occasionally unintended laughter. The user of the books will soon acquire the 'savoir faire' (know-how), and feel totally 'gem?tlich' (comfortable) when performing in a foreign language..."

THE COMPLETE PUCCINI LIBRETTI
In Two Volumes
By Nico Castel
Edited by Marcie Stapp

The internationally acclaimed tenor and multi-lingual diction teacher for the Metropolitan Opera Company, Professor Nico Castel, has completed all the operatic libretti of Giacomo Puccini [*except Turandot, which will not be available until the year 2022].

These are Italian operatic libretti with a big difference from any previously done. They include the Leyerle Three-line Phonetic-Translation System consisting of the International Phonetic Alphabet spelling of the libretti on the first line, the original Italian language on the middle line (in bold type), and the word-for-word English translation on the third line. When further explication of an otherwise difficult to understand passage in the word-for-word translation is needed, a fourth line, presented in a more literary translation, is also given. In addition, Professor Castel provides synopses of the entire operas, vocal categories and names of the casts, translations of the stage directions and other significant information which would be helpful to the opera singer, advanced voice student, vocal coach, stage director, music director and all opera lovers who might not actually take an active part in opera production. Foreword by Sherrill Milnes

Volume I of the Puccini Libretti contains: La Bohème; Edgar; La Fanciulla del West; Madama Butterfly, and Manon Lescaut.

Volume II (Revised) of the Puccini Libretti contains: La Rondine; Tosca; Il Trittico (Il Tabarro; Suor Angelica; and Gianni Schicchi) and Le Villi.

Foreword by Sherrill Milnes

In his Foreword to this volume, Sherrill Milnes states: I'm only sorry that this work wasn't available when I was a young singer as it would have made my operatic life much easier. I believe this book will become a classic with students, teachers and professionals alike and I welcome its publication with great enthusiasm. I look forward to Nico's Verdi and Mozart series with equal anticipation."

*Note that Volume II costs $5.00 more than the other three Verdi volumes. The reason is purely economic: It has 180 more pages than Volume I, on which the pricing decisions were made.

As with the Puccini Libretti volumes, Sherrill Milnes wrote the Foreword for the Verdi. As he is recognized as an international specialist in the difficult Verdi baritone roles, this seemed most appropriate. Since the first publication of the Libretti series in late 1994, Nico Castel has been deluged with positive comments regarding his accomplishments both as a vocal artist and as a diction teacher? both positions of which he has held for many years at the Metropolitan Opera. In addition, he has been a sought-after performer with The New York City Opera and many other major world theatres as a character tenor. He has more than 200 of these roles in his repertoire. He is also much in demand as a foreign-language diction specialist in many major music schools and opera houses: The Juilliard School; Manhattan School of Music; The Mannes School of Music; Boston University; The Helsinki National Opera; Indiana University; The Israel Institute of Vocal Arts in Tel Aviv, etc., etc. His colleagues in all these places hold him in such high esteem, it is impossible for us to list all their comments in this space.

FRENCH OPERA LIBRETTI
Volume I
By Nico Castel

This addition to Castel's monumental opera libretti series contains: Werther and Ch?rubin (Massenet); Carmen (Bizet); Samson et Dalila (Saint-Sa?ns); Lakm? (Delibes); Pell?as et M?lisande (Debussy); Don Carlos (Verdi)[French version]; Les Contes d'Hoffmann (Offenbach); with the IPA transcriptions; Word-for-Word translations; A guide to the I.P.A.; Notes on the French transcriptions; and a Foreword by Beverly Sills, who states:

"My dear friend, Nico Castel, and I would often sing together in an opera, and each time I would marvel at his expertise in the language in which we were performing. Later, when I became the Director of the New York City Opera I would at times despair at the way young singers tend to sacrifice the value of the text for the sake of volume or pearl-shaped tones. I'm sure that I'm not the only one for whom fledgling dramatic Italian sopranos would audition with ïPooce, pooce' instead of ïPace, pace, mio Dio.' On more than one occasion I advised them to listen to Nico's use of any given word in any given language and to study, if possible, with him in his coaching classes.

The world of music is fortunate that he has undertaken the herculean task of translating and phonetically spelling out each word of the works by Puccini and Verdi „ and with this volume some of the important operas in the French repertoire. His work can be the finishing touch for many a singer. I think that few would dispute that in general the American singer of today is the best trained in the world. The only aspect in which he or she might be at a disadvantage is in the matter of pronunciation. Actually it is more than mere pronunciation. It is in the freedom and imagination with which a singer can play around with the words that true and individual artistry is projected. These books by Nico Castel are of immeasurable help on the road to achieving this."

Volume I contains: Werther and Chérubin (Massenet); Carmen (Bizet); Samson et Dalila (Saint-Saëns); Lakmé (Delibes); Pelléas et Mélisande (Debussy); Don Carlos (Verdi)[French version]; Les Contes d'Hoffmann (Offenbach)

A work of this dimension has been needed for a long time and we can thank a man like Nico Castel for his tireless industry and love of words.... By Anton Belov

In his Foreword to this volume, Nico Castel states: "Anton Belov, a young Russian baritone at the Juilliard School, was my student for several years. He showed great interest in creating the definitive IPA table for the lyric Russian language and in time I managed to interest him in the project of writing translations of Russian operas with phonetic IPA transcriptions in a format similar to what I had done for Leyerle Publications with French, German and Italian operas... He took to the task with great enthusiasm and now we all can be glad to see the fruits of his labor in this book, containing some of the best loved Russian operas in the repertoire. VARIANTS IN WAGNER'S VOCAL LINES
(The "Ring" Operas)
By Susan S. Webb

This unusual volume is a departure from any volume we have ever published. It contains the musical and texts variants from one published or manuscript source to another, as they are found in Wagner's DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN.

pp. Hard Binding Smyth-Sewn
ISBN 1-878617-65-6
$70.00

To this unique volume by Susan S. Webb, the author brings years of
experience having worked with first rate exponents of Wagner's Ring
Cycle, probably most notable being Wolfgang Wagner, himself,
who invited Miss Webb to join the music staff of the Bayreuther
Festspiele for the 1988 "Ring" and provided her with the incomparable
experience of spending weeks and weeks in the capitol city of
Wagnerland.
Susan S. Webb has been an assistant conductor and prompter with the
San Francisco, Chicago Lyric and Metropolitan Opera companies. Her
full-time engagement with the Metropolitan Opera began when Music
Director James Levine invited her to be an assistant for the "Ring":
four new productions which were videotaped and shown on public
television, and recorded by Deutsche Grammaphon.
In her thirty-five years in professional opera, Miss Webb has had ample
opportunity to appreciate the practical problems raised by editoral
variants in hours of rehearsal with such great Wagnerian singers as
Hildegarde Behrens, Rainer Goldberg, Ben Heppner, Peter Hoffmann,
James King, Christa Ludwig, Franz Mazura, James Morris, Birgit
Nilsson, Leonie Rysanek, Thomas Stewart, Jess Thomas, John
Tomlinson, Ekkehard Wlashiha, Heinz Zednik and many others.
As a music staff member of the Bayreuther Festspiele, she helped
to prepare the 1988 "Ring" (Barenboim/Kupfer), taking advantage of
her research in the National Archives to provide information on "Ring"
variants. When Miss Webb showed her proposal and some examples
of her comparison of variants to Herr Wolfgang Wagner, head of the
Festival and grandson of the composer, he said that he was pleased
that the work represented the best of both worlds; it was both scholarly
and practical.
In addition to this volume, the author has provided libretto translations
(German/English) for the Metropolitan Opera Guild, including the
operas, Fidelio; Die Entführung aus dem Serail; Die Zauberflöte; Elektra;
Der Fliegende Holländer; Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg; and
Tannhäuser.

HANDEL OPERA LIBRETTI
Volume II
By Nico Castel
Edited by Marcie Stapp

This volume II of the Handel Opera libretti is the 21st in the hard-back series by Professor Castel. In his Foreword to this volume, the dynamic conductor of the Metropolitan Opera and the other major opera houses in the world, James Conlon, states: "If today's younger generation of singers and coaches are increasingly better prepared to confront the linguistic challenges of an operatic career than in the past, it is in no small part due to the great nfluence of Nico Castel.
His multi-volume guide through the intricacies of operatic diction is no longer a luxury but a necessity for any serious professional involved in opera. Its utility is not limited to students, but above all, to singers, conductors, coaches and stage directors who are already in the midst of their careers....
I myself am the proud owner of over a dozen of these volumes. I read and reread them. Whether to prepare an opera, review another, or for simple pleasure, the wealth of information is never exhausted. I consider studying them a must for all of us who love and participate in this great art form, and a potential source of pleasure and enhanced appreciation for opera lovers of all ages."
